
Senior Naval Architecture Specialist

The Principal Naval Architect is responsible for interpreting internal or external business issues and recommending best practices.
They will be tasked with solving complex Naval Architecture-related problems and will work independently with minimal guidance.
The Principal Naval Architect may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in Naval Architecture.
As such, they must have in-depth expertise in Naval Architecture as well as broad knowledge of the Naval Architecture discipline within the Engineering function.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead a team of Engineers responsible for design inputs and installation engineering including:
- Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per project specifications, design codes, and standards
- Provide installation loads on offshore structures to Structural Engineers at the Engineering phase of the project so that the structures can be designed for the installation loads
- Perform detail installation engineering calculations to confirm the installation loads are within the permissible capacities of installation equipment like barges, derrick barges, cranes, etc.
- Evaluate the limiting weather conditions for various offshore installations without overloading installation equipment or installed structures
- Apply advanced skills and broad knowledge to address complex problems and non-standard situations
- Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures
- Manage own time to meet objectives and forecast resource requirements
- Clearly communicate difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of view
- Direct an Engineering team, lead Discipline engineering design of assigned work areas, and complete tasks within scheduled deadlines and budgets
- Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on assigned projects including scope, deliverables, schedule, and manpower resources
- Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identify corrective actions required
- Act as project representative for the Discipline during meetings with Project Teams, Customer discipline leads, and relevant agencies
- The Principal Naval Architect (PNA) is involved in the following key activities:
- Become familiar with project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and inter-discipline requirements; identify concerns early and take initiatives to address issues
- Member of the Bid Engineering team providing Naval inputs in the form of analysis at the Bid stage and provides execution work hours
- Identify installation limits and evaluate if in-house hardware can be used or external hardware needs to be hired based on calculated limits; effective evaluation helps in accurately costing bids
- Raise Technical queries and deviations from standards whenever necessary
- During the EPCI stage, the PNA is involved in:
- Identifying changes to scope and promptly raising change notifications including supporting documentation and estimates
- Interface with disciplines to develop clash-free designs
- Interface with other departments to obtain input for Discipline designs and drawings
- Maintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, fabrication, Marine, and Project Management Team as required
- Document substantive communications resulting in significant decisions or assignment of actions and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline Manager
- Raise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and maintain preferred procedures, specifications, standards, practices, and operational requirements
- Prepare, review, and approve engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specifications
- Participate in finalizing deliverable lists and ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrity
- Review project schedule and fabrication schedule in relation to construction sequence, milestones, and engineering scope
- Attend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys as required
- Provide technical direction and review of Designers producing products related to Installation Support Engineering
- Prepare, review, and approve design reports and procedures
- Assist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them to proceed with their deliverables
- Assist procurement personnel in procuring discipline equipment, materials, and services; ensure work produced complies with customer objectives and procedures
- Assist in updating weight reports based on receipt of vendor information
- Review and approve vendor and subcontractor submittals checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessary
- Review and approve design verification through single-discipline check /inter-discipline check (IDC)
- Keep the Discipline Manager and Project Management Team informed of all activities and concerns, technical, budgetary, and manpower related
- Assist in providing inputs for actual, planning, and forecasting progress reports including associated productivity
- Alert the project team of any deviation from the scope or need for a change order
- Monitor KPI measurement results and take corrective action as necessary to improve Discipline performance including performance at interfaces with others
- Coordinate with other Discipline Lead Engineers and Designers to ensure timely receipt of necessary design inputs
- Check final subcontractor and vendor data manuals to ensure all requested data has been received and approved
- Review technical documents prepared by 3rd party service providers or ones prepared by other offices as part of installation engineering calculation or procedures
- Present issues and problems to Customers in a timely manner and assist the Project Management Team in negotiating resolution in accordance with project and company requirements
- Perform Technical Quality Audit reviews in accordance with MDR Global Procedures
- Liaise with the Marine Warranty Surveyor, Classification Society, Client's representatives, etc. to provide responses to comments made on Naval documents and their eventual closure
- Capture lessons learned and enter into MDR's Lessons Learned system
- Additionally, the PNA is involved in the day-to-day running of CSE activities including:
- Guiding less experienced engineers on MDR and Discipline procedures, standards, worksheets, auditors, third parties, etc. on their review and approval
- Supervising and guiding assigned engineers and coordinating with Lead Designers for Discipline engineering and design deliverables
- Responsible for the engineering integrity of assigned work areas
- Monitoring costs of own work processes
- Assisting in maintaining departmental technical guidelines and standard calculation notes
- Participating in development and maintenance of Global Procedures, Software, and Standards
- Developing communication and presentation skills, writing technical papers, participating in conferences and/or seminars, presenting design solutions, and/or presenting topics at 'lunch and learn' etc.
- Identifying and providing training to staff in specific techniques and proprietary software
- Providing information on employee performance to the Discipline Manager
- Assisting the Discipline manager in interviewing job applicants
- Performing, reviewing, and approving Installation engineering designs, analyses, evaluations, calculations, and procedures for loadout, transportation, and installation of offshore structures
- Identifying project staff needs based on individual engineer skill sets and providing requests to the discipline manager
- Planning, organizing, and assigning tasks, responsibilities, and manhour budgets to the discipline team and verifying tasks are completed within budgets
- Leading the Discipline team during project audits (internal, Customer and third-party technical audits) and Design reviews
- Assisting the Discipline manager in the preparation of quarterly forecasts and manpower planning
- Anticipating project engineering needs and planning accordingly
- Coordinating with vendors for discipline-managed/produced items
- Assisting the Discipline manager and Project Engineering Manager or Project Manager in the Performance Evaluation of project team members
