Research Fellowships: Exploring the African Diaspora in Australia

We are seeking two research fellows to undertake a comprehensive investigation of the challenges faced by African-Australian communities and the reasons behind their significant representation in Pentecostal churches.

Project Overview

The research project aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges encountered by African-Australian communities and to examine the role of Pentecostal churches in supporting their translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging.

Research Objectives
  • To identify and analyze the range of challenges faced by African-Australian communities.
  • To determine the factors contributing to the high representation of African Australians in Pentecostal churches.
  • To investigate how Pentecostal churches facilitate the translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging among African-Australian communities.
  • To contribute to policy efforts aimed at improving outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.
Methodology

The research fellows will employ ethnographic research methods to collect data from Pentecostal churches in Australia and African diasporas within the country.

  • To investigate questions such as:
  • How do Pentecostal churches impact processes of settlement and 'integration'?
  • What is the role of Pentecostal megachurches in generating transnational religious fields?
  • What impact does this have on Australian cities' post-secular social landscapes?
Requirements

We welcome applicants with expertise in anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields. The project is particularly suitable for candidates with strong interests in the intersections of migration and religion.

Applications from students of African heritage are encouraged.
