The role of Ecological Specialist involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to provide ecological assessments and management services for various development projects across New South Wales.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive flora surveys, vegetation mapping, biodiversity monitoring, habitat monitoring, threatened species monitoring, and management planning to ensure the protection of the environment.
- Analyze and interpret ecological data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to inform project decisions.
- Work independently on ecological tasks and activities in remote locations, requiring strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Design and implement ecological fieldwork for general and targeted surveys, adhering to established protocols and methodologies.
- Prepare high-quality consulting reports for environmental assessments, monitoring, and management, summarizing key findings and recommendations.
- Develop project management skills, including budgeting, client liaison, and collaboration with the project team.
- Collaborate with the team to deliver ecological/environmental reporting as part of a larger project, ensuring seamless integration of results.
Requirements:
- Hold a recognized tertiary qualification (bachelor's degree or higher) in Botany/Ecology or a related field.
- Demonstrate high-level plant identification skills, with the ability to accurately classify and document plant species.
- Possess 2+ years relevant industry experience in a consulting role, with a strong understanding of ecological principles and practices.
- Be proficient in using GIS software, with experience in data analysis and interpretation.
- Have a strong understanding of New South Wales and Australian legislation and its applicability to environmental and ecological reporting.
- Exhibit well-developed literacy, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Desirable Qualities:
- Experience in business management, including financial planning and personnel supervision.
- Qualification as an arborist, demonstrating expertise in tree care and management.
- Graduate Diploma in Bushfire Protection, indicating a strong understanding of fire ecology and risk assessment.
