Young First Nations Artists Opportunity

We are seeking a talented and ambitious individual to join our team of creative professionals. As a young First Nations artist, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and career through this exciting project.

The successful applicant will be responsible for creating new work, developing their artistic practice, and engaging with the community. This is an excellent chance to build your portfolio, network with industry professionals, and contribute to the growth and development of the arts sector in Australia.

This project aims to support the creative practice and career development of Australian First Nations artists or arts workers aged 18–35. The fund seeks to build the capacity of First Nations young people by developing skills, career pathways, marketing, and audience development to sustain and elevate practice and engagement in the arts and cultural sectors and creative industries.

About the Project

This project provides grants of up to $20,000 to support the development of new work, skills development, and career advancement. Activities can include but are not limited to:

  • Professional skills development, mentoring, masterclasses, workshops, residencies
  • Creation of new work
  • Practice-based research
  • Collaborations and exchanges
  • Touring
  • Productions
  • Exhibitions
  • Performances
  • Publishing
  • Recording
  • Promotion and marketing
  • Materials costs associated with a project/program
  • Access costs
Key Requirements

To be eligible for this project, applicants must:

  • Be an Australian First Nations artist or arts & culture worker
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35 years
  • Live in Australia
Selection Criteria

The selection process will consider the following criteria:

  • Project Quality: The quality of the artistic and/or cultural development of your proposed project.
  • Project Impact: Expected impact, considering timeliness and relevance, career and practice development, level of innovation, ambition, experimentation, or risk-taking, significance within the practice area, self-determination and leadership, and contribution to cultural expression (if applicable).
  • Project Viability: Capacity to deliver, considering realistic timeline, realistic budget with income/expenditure breakdown, skills and involvement of artists/professionals, appropriate payments to participants, support materials including letters of support, IP Protocol adherence and appropriate consultations (if applicable), and cultural safety and well-being.
