Job Description:We seek an experienced analyst or advisor, with a background in supporting commissions of inquiry or other investigatory bodies, who's ready to take the next step in their career.
This role offers the opportunity to join our Inquiry Facilitation team and contribute to the important work of the Waitangi Tribunal. This opportunity has arisen due to internal career progression.
The Waitangi Tribunal Unit provides a comprehensive range of services to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent commission of inquiry that inquires into and reports on claims submitted by Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975.
The team works closely with a wide range of people including the judiciary, Tribunal members, claimants and counsel, and engages with and provides analysis and advice on a variety of inquiry material, evidence and submissions.
Responsibilities:- Lead advice on the design and running of inquiries, working closely with Tribunal inquiry panels to scope and shape inquiries, with support from Principal Facilitators.
- Guide and mentor Researcher/Analyst facilitation team members.
- Collaborate effectively with judiciary, Tribunal members and colleagues across the Waitangi Tribunal Unit.
- Experience in a commission of inquiry, court or tribunal setting, or other investigatory bodies and knowledge and understanding of inquiry processes.
- Understanding of public policy process and machinery of government, and their relationship to te Tiriti and the Māori Crown relationship.
- A tertiary qualification in public policy, Māori studies, law, New Zealand history, or another relevant discipline.
- A clear understanding of and commitment to the work of the Waitangi Tribunal, with a genuine interest in engaging with te ao Māori.
- Knowledge of te reo Māori, tikanga, and mātauranga Māori would be beneficial.
- Ability to effectively plan and prioritise your own workload, as well as coordinating the tasks of inquiry teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a strong focus on customer service.

The Inquiry Facilitation team is responsible for facilitating the flow of information to support official Tribunal events, providing robust procedural analysis and advice, drafting judicial memoranda-directions, evidential analysis, and inquiry planning to support the Tribunal hearings.
