Job Overview

This is a role within the Aboriginal Youth Justice Policy and Strategy team. The successful candidate will drive meaningful reform and support Victoria's Aboriginal youth.


  • The role involves supporting the delivery of Wirkara Kulpa, Victoria's Aboriginal Youth Justice Strategy, through policy development, project coordination, and evaluation.
  • Collaboration with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), and other stakeholders is required to provide expert advice on Aboriginal youth justice matters.


About This Role

The Aboriginal Youth Justice unit at the Department of Justice and Community Safety has responsibility for designing and developing policy, strategy, and program responses for young Aboriginal people in contact with or at risk of contact with the Youth Justice system.


A key focus of the team is to implement Wirkara Kulpa in partnership with the Aboriginal Justice Caucus under the governance of the Youth Collaborative Working Group of the Aboriginal Justice Forum.



The Opportunity
  • Ongoing full-time position available.
  • Contribute to project management, research, and development of policies, documentation, and communications for Aboriginal Youth Justice.
  • Assist with the implementation of Wirkara Kulpa and contribute to progress reports to relevant forums.
  • Provide secretariat and administrative support for various working groups and assist with report preparation.
  • Assist with analysis and commentary on emerging issues relating to youth justice.


Key Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal community, society, culture, and issues impacting it.
  • Sensitivity and ability to communicate effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
  • Experience in developing and implementing policy, strategy, or program responses in a government or community services context.
  • Strong skills in building collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes.
