Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Power Systems Engineer to join our team as an Associate Technical Director - Traction Power. As a key member of our Rail Traction Power sector, you will play a primary and influential leadership role on national projects, mentoring and guiding upcoming Engineers to deliver quality assurance on significant national projects.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Prepare and review complex reports, proposals, and presentations to clients in the following areas:
    1. AC and DC traction substation system design, including single line diagrams, layouts, circuit diagrams, earthing and bonding schematics, and coordination with communication, civil, structural, and mechanical design disciplines.
    2. AC and DC traction power system studies, including equipment sizing, fault calculations, and insulation coordination studies.
    3. Coordination of the traction power system with overhead wiring and signalling system design.
    4. Lightning protection system design.
    5. Earthing system analysis and design, including pipeline LFI studies.
    6. Earthing, bonding, and electrolysis assessment and design.
    7. AC and DC traction protection systems analysis, setting, specification, and design.
  2. Manage the delivery of specialized components of projects, advising on the most effective team to achieve this.
  3. Govern technical reviews and quality assurance activities for projects, documentation, processes, and practices.
  4. Use technical knowledge to identify and realize new client opportunities and provide technical input into the bidding process.
  5. Lead the technical development of staff, coaching, and mentoring on technical issues.
  6. Provide technical expertise and overview to clients and stakeholders and assist clients through technical decision-making, providing alternative options/solutions if there are changes to project parameters.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • 15+ years' experience as a power systems engineer, with at least 5 years recent experience in traction power system design or equivalent.
  • Tertiary qualification in electrical/power engineering, preferably chartered engineering and RPEQ status.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, including a working knowledge of MS Office.

Highly regarded skills include:

  • Experience in a design consultancy role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the design teams and deliver traction design packages.
  • Experience working with traction power system modelling software tools.
  • Ability to develop complex earthing and induction models in CDEGS earthing system software.
  • Ability to develop traction power system models in ETAP or equivalent software tool.
  • Ability to develop transient studies in ATP/PSCAD/EMTP.
  • Ability to develop EMC management plans and manage the EMC management procedure.
  • Ability to develop maintenance strategies and procedures, commissioning plans, and documentation.

Note: Not all these skills are expected, and training will be given to develop these.
