Job Overview

The judicial associate plays a pivotal role within the Federal Court of Australia, providing administrative support to a Division 1 judge handling Family Law matters.

This position is responsible for ensuring timely completion of tasks associated with court hearings and the effective operation of chambers. The successful candidate will possess excellent organisational skills, be able to work effectively in a team environment, and exhibit strong interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the judicial officer during trials, pre-trial and duty lists;
  • Manage court files prior to and at the completion of trials;
  • Ensure prompt distribution of orders and judgments;
  • Enter data accurately into the Court's case management systems;
  • Make travel arrangements for circuit sittings and attendance at meetings;
  • Update the judicial officer's filing system and provide assistance with legal research and judgment preparation;
  • Supervise the judicial officer's legal associate and manage chamber workflow.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A degree in law would be advantageous;
  • Completion of a Family Law unit as part of tertiary studies will be highly beneficial;
  • Current NSW driver's licence (preferred).

  • Sound organisational skills and ability to manage priorities;
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with members of the judiciary, the legal profession, litigants, and the public;
  • Demonstrated insight into, and empathy for, the challenges faced by litigants and children in family law disputes;
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and capacity to adhere to, the principles of confidentiality;
  • Knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia organisation, functions, practices, procedures, and terminology.
