Job Title: Aboriginal Cultural Mentor and Support Officer

This is a critical role in assisting staff, children, and families to improve the stability and cultural connection of the young people in our care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Directly support staff, children, and families to enhance the stability and cultural connection of the young people.
  • Collaborate with families, children, staff, and carers to develop a tailored cultural plan that meets the needs of each individual.
  • Facilitate identifying and locating extended family connections and reengagement with extended families and kin.
  • Engage with Aboriginal communities and provide mentoring support for children and young people to connect to family, culture, and community.
  • Support staff, families, and children to identify their communities of origin, connection to country, and mob.
  • Assess the needs of families and children for specialized flexible support with a focus on the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
  • Enhance the practical application of care for children in the context of their cultural background.
  • Maintain open communication with staff, carers, and families about events, programs, and activities available within their local Aboriginal communities.
Requirements:
  • Current Working with Children Check (paid employment)
  • Current First Aid Certificate (Provide First Aid; HLTAID011)
  • National Police Check
  • A current driver's license
  • Vehicle capable of transporting 4 or more people
  • Comprehensive Car Insurance
  • Ability to follow protocol and individualized programs designed for the young person
  • Willingness to participate in pre-employment medical checks
  • Two work-related references
  • Recognition by local Indigenous groups
  • Working knowledge of youth work
  • Extensive experience in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Knowledge of Needs-Based Restorative Framework concepts and strategies
