The Opportunity
This PhD program aims to utilize state-of-the-art multi-channel near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to assess the functional brain response of infants born preterm in long-term follow-up.
The project will focus on correlations between neurovascular physiology, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental assessments, with a goal of detecting socio-cognitive disorders early in preterm infants.
The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort of clinicians and researchers based at Monash Newborn and Department of Paediatrics.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research using NIRS to assess brain function in preterm infants
- Collaborate with clinicians and researchers to develop and implement neurodevelopmental assessments
- Contribute to the development of a PhD program focused on neonatal brain injury and neurodevelopmental follow-up
Requirements
- Applicants should have a background/training in clinical neonatology or follow-up of high-risk infants
- Strong research skills and experience with NIRS or related technologies
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Supervisory Team
The principal supervisor will be Associate Professor Flora Wong, with co-supervisors including Dr Robin Laycock and other experts in the field.
