Clayton South, Victoria, Australia Monash University. Full time

The Opportunity

This PhD program aims to utilize state-of-the-art multi-channel near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to assess the functional brain response of infants born preterm in long-term follow-up.

The project will focus on correlations between neurovascular physiology, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental assessments, with a goal of detecting socio-cognitive disorders early in preterm infants.

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort of clinicians and researchers based at Monash Newborn and Department of Paediatrics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research using NIRS to assess brain function in preterm infants
  • Collaborate with clinicians and researchers to develop and implement neurodevelopmental assessments
  • Contribute to the development of a PhD program focused on neonatal brain injury and neurodevelopmental follow-up

Requirements

  • Applicants should have a background/training in clinical neonatology or follow-up of high-risk infants
  • Strong research skills and experience with NIRS or related technologies
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Supervisory Team

The principal supervisor will be Associate Professor Flora Wong, with co-supervisors including Dr Robin Laycock and other experts in the field.
