Neonatal Neurodevelopmental Research Scholar

Monash University is seeking a highly motivated PhD scholar to contribute to a novel research project investigating socio-cognitive disorders in preterm infants using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
This 3-year fixed-term appointment offers a tax-free stipend of $35,013 per annum, providing successful applicants with the opportunity to amplify their impact at a world top 50 university.
About the OpportunityThis PhD program aims to develop and apply state-of-the-art NIRS-based approaches for early detection of socio-cognitive dysfunction in preterm infants. The project will focus on correlations between neurovascular physiology, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopmental assessments.
The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort of clinicians and researchers based at Monash Newborn and Department of Paediatrics. They will work closely with Associate Professor Flora Wong, a renowned expert in neonatal brain development and brain injury, as well as other co-supervisors with expertise in vision neuroscience and animal studies.
To be eligible for this PhD position, candidates must meet the Monash University minimum requirements for admission. A cover letter, CV, academic transcript(s), and publications are required as part of the application process.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct novel NIRS-based assessments of preterm infant brain function
- Develop and apply machine learning algorithms for data analysis
- Collaborate with clinical and research teams to design and implement study protocols
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., clinical neonatology, follow-up of high-risk infants)
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Experience with NIRS or similar imaging modalities
