Canberra, ACT, Australia UNSW Australia Full time

Job Summary

The UNSW Australia is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Space Governance Research Officer to join our team. As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for facilitating and conducting research associated with various research projects, including the regulation of space activities in Australia and globally.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to leading-edge research on the governance of activities in outer space. You will work closely with our team to design and plan research projects, develop research protocols, and report against milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and conduct research associated with various research projects, including the regulation of space activities in Australia and globally.
  • Design and plan research projects, develop research protocols, and report against milestones.
  • Work closely with our team to develop research deliverables and contribute to the extension of the rules-based order to the space domain.
  • Support the development of research projects and contribute to the commercial and public benefits of the space domain.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to initiate and maintain effective relationships and exercise discretion and confidentiality.
  • Manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Develop and maintain effective written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.

Requirements

  • University graduate in the humanities, with a focus on space activities, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training or experience.
  • Knowledge of research protocols, design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, to respectful relationships within and outside a team, and to the health and safety of all those with whom you work.

Working Arrangements

This is a casual position, with a minimum of 250 hours spread unevenly across approximately 18 months. The role will involve surges for in-person support to multiple workshops, which are likely to be conducted in Canberra. The project budgets do not include any travel costs for a Casual Research Officer. It is possible, but unlikely, that travel costs for in-person attendance could be funded.
