As a highly skilled Marine Technical Specialist, you will be the technical expert on marine systems for the Australian Defence Force. You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the ship's mechanical engineering plant across power, propulsion, and auxiliary systems.

You will be a trusted member of the ship's Command Team, providing technical advice and recommendations to achieve the mission. In this dynamic role, you will be given a lot of responsibility early in your career, including managing a team of highly trained marine technicians.

The key areas of responsibility for Marine Technical Specialists include:

  • Ship structures such as tanks, compartments, and masts
  • Propulsion systems
  • Electrical generation and distribution
  • Domestic and associated mechanical services
  • Main and auxiliary machinery
  • Diesel and gas turbine engines
  • Automatic and remote-control systems
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Ventilation systems

Navy Engineers have the opportunity to lead specialised technical teams, work on advanced maritime platforms and systems, and continue their professional learning throughout their career. This enables Chartered Engineer (CPEng) accreditation with Engineers Australia, giving international recognition of their engineering competency.

In addition to their technical expertise, Marine Technical Specialists will provide leadership, management, administration, and career advice to sailors and junior officers within their division. They will also learn additional skills and duties to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the security and safety of the ship and personnel onboard.
