Steward/Starter Role

Our integrity-driven organization seeks a detail-oriented and efficient individual to join our team as a steward or starter. This exciting role involves administering race day operations and fostering a dynamic sports administration career in harness racing.

  1. Key Responsibilities:
  • Start races and trial duties efficiently, adhering to established guidelines;
  • Oversee race meetings to ensure fairness, safety, and compliance with governing rules and policies;
  • Display exceptional race-reading skills, analyzing videos, assessing interference or tactics, and making informed decisions;
  • Conduct inquiries into race day incidents, providing clear and consistent outcomes;
  • Attend race meetings, inquiries, and appeals, performing assigned duties under governing regulations;
  • Accurately complete race day documentation within set timelines;
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and fairness in all interactions, upholding organizational standards;
Non-Race Day Duties:
  • Ensure secure handling and delivery of samples for prohibited substance testing;
  • Conduct inquiries and stable inspections, preparing and presenting evidence professionally;
  • Provide testimony at appeals hearings and other proceedings when necessary;

Requirements:

  1. Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Demonstrated ability to start harness races efficiently, including mobile and standing start events, in accordance with governing rules and procedures;
  • Proficiency in computer literacy, utilizing Microsoft Office applications for reporting, documentation, and communication;
  • Current motor vehicle driver's license;
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Sound understanding of governing rules and regulations, including race day procedures, handicapping guidelines, field selection criteria, bookmaker and totalisator rules, and policies relating to horse registration and licensing of participants;
  • Knowledge of the harness racing industry and its operational environment;
  • Practical and theoretical equine knowledge, with an understanding of standardbred horses and harness gear;
  • Experience working in, or exposure to, a stewarding environment;

Other Requirements:

  • Travel between HRV Head Office, country clubs, and regional Victoria will be required;
  • Weeknight and weekend work may be necessary, aligned with the racing calendar;
  • The successful candidate must:
    • Work in and around horses, occasionally handling them;
    • Fly in light aircraft to race meetings within Victoria;
  • The position holder must:
    • Undergo satisfactory police background, reference checks, and probity checks in accordance with policy;
    • Possess and maintain a current valid Victorian motor vehicle driver's license;
    • Possess and maintain a current valid Victorian Working with Children Check;
