About the Position

A permanent, full-time role is currently available for an Animal Care Specialist to provide daily care for shelter animals and exceptional customer service to the public.

Animal Care Specialists are required to assist in educating the community on responsible pet ownership and animal management services as needed. Daily duties include:

  • Feeding, watering and inspecting all animals
  • Cleaning of animal housing areas, including hosing out, replacing bedding, litter trays, feeding and watering utensils
  • Administering medication and treatment as prescribed by a veterinarian
  • Routine disinfection of animal housing areas and equipment
  • Exercising animals as required
  • Providing environmental enrichment for animals
  • Monitoring impounded animal health daily and reporting any sick or injured animals to the Shelter Supervisor
  • Assisting with animal admissions and veterinarians as needed
  • Using a digital camera to update the Council's Facebook page for animals
  • Complying with and ensuring compliance with OH&S legislation, risk management requirements and Council policies
  • Providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers
  • Driving and delivering relevant animals to veterinary clinics for scheduled or unscheduled procedures

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a passion for animal welfare and a strong commitment to contributing to animal enrichment. Basic experience and on-the-job training in animal care and handling, as well as interpersonal and communication skills, are essential for this position.

You must be able to demonstrate self-motivation and self-discipline in your work.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a busy customer service environment
  • Ability to work with companion animals and stock with understanding and knowledge of animal behavior
  • Willingness and availability to work across all areas of the shelter
  • Ability to work in a highly emotionally driven workforce
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Well-developed customer service and communication skills
  • Positive team member and keen attitude for sharing knowledge
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues relevant to the position
