Key Role

Official Visitors form an integral part of addressing concerns and issues faced by young people in custody, as well as monitoring the conditions and treatment of those in custodial centers across New South Wales (NSW).

This is a community-based appointment made by the Minister for Youth Justice. Official Visitors are assigned to a youth justice center for up to four years and visit the center once a fortnight.

Primary Responsibilities
  1. Address enquiries and complaints made by young people in custody.
  2. Monitor the conditions and treatment of young people in custodial centers.
Essential Skills
  • Able to provide support and understanding of the issues facing Aboriginal children while in custody.
  • Ability to assist young people in communicating and negotiating their issues and concerns.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

The Inspector of Custodial Services acknowledges that lived experience brings valuable insights to our work with this community. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the established standards of the role and are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
