About the Role

The Australian Antarctic Division is seeking a highly skilled Senior Acoustics Officer to join our Polar Technology section. As a key member of our team, you will provide specialized acoustic support across the Australian Antarctic Program, working closely with our Oceanographic Systems Manager and other senior team members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for acoustic systems and marine science equipment associated with the Australian Antarctic Division's Marine Science program.
  • Support the activities of the general Antarctic Science program, including equipment and systems aboard the AAD Icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina.
  • Collaborate with the Polar Technology section to advance Australia's strategic, scientific, environmental, and economic interests in the Antarctic.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences (with a strong mathematics focus) from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas institution.
  • Experience as a team member working in demanding multi-disciplinary environments.
  • Knowledge or experience in marine acoustic systems, including multibeam echo sounders for hydrographic applications or sounders for the detection and classification of marine biology.
  • Excellent technical skills, with the ability to develop and support quality working relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  • Good time management skills and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Working Conditions

The successful applicant will be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, and will need to meet specific medical, adaptability, and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.

Relocation assistance is subject to negotiation, and the ability to perform shift work is a requirement for this position.
