Katherine Town Council is a municipal authority serving the Katherine community, providing essential services such as rates management, infrastructure development, animal control, waste management, and other core services. Located in the heart of the Big Rivers region, Katherine is the fourth-largest township in the Northern Territory, situated near the Port of Darwin, Australia's gateway to the Asia Pacific.
The council serves a population of around 10,000 people, including residents and personnel from the nearby RAAF Airbase at Tindal. Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Finance Officer to join our team, reporting directly to the Finance Manager. This role involves providing financial services, including rates administration, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and general ledger reconciliations. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, organizational abilities, and knowledge of Australian accounting standards and local government financial obligations.
Key Responsibilities- Undertake daily financial transactions with high accuracy, ensuring compliance with financial policies and regulations.
- Prepare and submit BAS/ATO and Superannuation returns, bank deposits, and other financial transactions.
- Assist in budget preparation, financial audits, and internal audit procedures.
- Review and update financial procedures to ensure alignment with Council policies, Australian Accounting Standards, and Local Government financial obligations.
- Provide training on accounting software systems and participate in change management initiatives.
- Act as a primary contact for financial inquiries from internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to meet selection criteria; sound written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in Microsoft Office products and packages; high-level customer service experience.
- Ability to understand various legislations, statutory obligations, and Council policies to make informed decisions.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to deliver good outcomes; extensive knowledge and skill gained through on-the-job training.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar or related role.
- 6 weeks annual leave with leave loading; 3 weeks personal/carers leave.
