Rural Counsellor Job Description

The NSW Government is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Rural Counsellor to join our team in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. As a Rural Counsellor, you will play a critical role in ensuring that individuals residing in rural areas have access to timely and effective psychotherapeutic treatment and counselling for the effects of mental illness, significant psychosocial distress, and suicidality.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Deliver advanced psychosocial assessment and counselling services to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
  2. Work independently, while maintaining strong multi-disciplinary links with ISLHD's Mental Health clinical governance framework for the provision of high-quality clinical services.
  3. Develop and maintain strong networking skills to work effectively with multiple stakeholder groups, including people with lived experience of suicide and recovery.
  4. Participate in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting on services to promote the efficiency of service delivery and quality care across the District.
  5. Provide clinical supervision to less experienced clinicians, be involved in peer supervision, and supervise postgraduate students as well as other health professionals, technical, and support staff.
  6. Demonstrate cultural competence and a commitment to improving the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  7. Hold a current NSW Driver's Licence and be able to travel across a large geographic area, in accordance with the demands of the position.

Selection Criteria:

  1. AHPRA registered Clinical Psychologist with a Master's Degree or higher; or an AHPRA registered Occupational Therapist or an AHPRA Registered Nurse with a recognised post-graduate qualification in psychological or psychotherapeutic interventions and at least three years' specialty, full-time equivalent; or a Social Worker with a minimum of a Bachelor's level qualification in social work, eligible for full membership of the AASW.
  2. Demonstrated capacity to deliver advanced psychosocial assessment and counselling services in order to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to work independently, while maintaining strong multi-disciplinary links with ISLHD's Mental Health clinical governance framework for the provision of high-quality clinical services.
  4. Excellent networking skills, with the capacity to work effectively with multiple stakeholder groups, including people with lived experience of suicide and recovery.

What You'll Need:

  • AHPRA registration as a Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, or Registered Nurse with a post-graduate qualification in psychological or psychotherapeutic interventions.
  • At least three years' specialty, full-time equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Eligibility for full membership of the AASW for Social Workers.
  • Current NSW Driver's Licence.
