Senior Technical Officer

About the Position
The Senior Technical Officer will play a pivotal role in the School of Engineering program at Deakin University's Burwood campus, focusing on areas such as soil and water testing, establishing new facilities, and ensuring safe operation of spaces.
This critical role requires the utilization of expertise in environmental engineering/science, chemistry, practical civil engineering experience, and health and safety knowledge to support the development and delivery of practical teaching, research, and administrative duties in the areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
The Senior Technical Officer will be responsible for providing expert technical support to staff, students, and stakeholders conducting experiments for teaching and research, requiring confidence in communication and the ability to seek feedback from various stakeholders.
The Key Responsibilities Include:
- Researching and proposing technical solutions to support strategic initiatives and operations of the School of Engineering.
- Providing hands-on support in a lab environment.
- Engaging with teaching activities, collaborating with academic staff, by providing specialist knowledge and training on equipment and engineering software predominantly relevant to the civil and environmental engineering discipline.
- Maintaining and operating laboratory equipment to a safe and high standard and performing minor repairs as necessary.
- Supporting laboratory projects for teaching and research, including outreach, industry engagement, and inter-school activities.
- Acquiring and maintaining stocks of consumables, equipment, and ensuring the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Requirements for Success:
- A Degree with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields such as chemistry, water quality testing, and environmental science/engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Ability to work with and train research staff and students, as well as provide guidance towards project safety.
