About the Role

As a key member of our Generative Experience Group, you will play a crucial role in developing and applying AI that empowers users to create every type of design on Canva.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the frontier of new world-class Design AI technology and products. You will contribute to critical projects and components across our design generation system, directly impacting experimental features, prototypes, and launching new design generation approaches to users.

We are looking for someone with expertise in building scalable backend systems using Java, as well as strong interests in design, deep learning, and generative AI. Your passion for innovative solutions and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams will drive our mission to create magical, emotionally engaging AI experiences.

What You Will Do

">

You will be responsible for owning the full lifecycle of features, from design documents and stakeholder alignment through implementation, testing, and maintenance. This includes staying up-to-date with state-of-the-art advancements in deep learning and generative AI where they apply to our domain at Canva.

Key responsibilities include:

  • ">
  • Building systems to generate and edit designs, working closely with other ML engineers, backend engineers, frontend engineers, designers, and product managers.">
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and effectively advocating for engineering needs to non-technical stakeholders within the group.">
  • Modeling initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes, and solutions.">
  • Identifying opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new ideas and improvements that help achieve our goals.">

Your Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Experience or strong interest in design and its intersection with engineering.">
  • Commercial experience in a software development environment, building scalable backend systems.">
  • Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented programming principles.">
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals, including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.">
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.">
