Mental health and wellbeing are integral to every student's educational journey. As a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, you will be pivotal in fostering a supportive school environment that prioritizes the emotional and psychological well-being of our students.

About the Role

The Department of Education is committed to enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of students through the implementation of evidence-based strategies and programs. This initiative aims to build capacity within schools to identify and address emerging mental health concerns, providing students with the support they need to thrive academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Promote a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing among students, staff, and families by leading education and awareness initiatives
  2. Support teachers and school staff in developing their capacity to embed evidence-based mental health strategies, interventions, and programs, ensuring all students receive the support they need
  3. Collaborate with school staff to inform, influence, and provide input into teaching and learning relating to mental health and wellbeing, ensuring alignment with school goals and objectives
  4. Work with school leadership and wellbeing teams to embed whole-school approaches to mental health into school planning and strategic development, driving positive change across the school community

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to lead and influence the work of others involved in the engagement, mental health, wellbeing, or learning of children and young people
  2. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes and strategies related to mental health, wellbeing, or learning
  3. Demonstrated ability to support students' mental health, wellbeing, or learning by developing and maintaining connections with external services
  4. Demonstrated high-level interpersonal skills and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration and relationship-building
  5. Demonstrated high-level capability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, parents, other employees, and the broader school community to focus on student learning, wellbeing, and engagement
  6. Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate by gaining buy-in and ownership for ideas, gaining agreement to proposals, or involving experts or other third parties to strengthen a case

Requirements

  • Qualified teacher with a strong understanding of the needs of the school community
  • Broad knowledge of mental health literacy, supporting emerging needs, and building school capacity
  • Ongoing support and professional development through structured and regular Learning Communities Training
