Principal Lawyer and Manager, Negligence Litigation and Redress Unit

The Department of Education's Legal Division provides critical legal services to support the delivery of the department's strategic objectives and manage legal risk. As a Principal Lawyer and Manager, you will work closely with the management team to provide direct, practical, and strategic legal advice to portfolio ministers, the secretary, and other senior staff.
The Negligence Litigation and Redress (NLR) unit is responsible for managing all litigated and non-litigated negligence claims brought against the department. This includes personal injury and property damage claims, bullying and historical sexual abuse claims. The successful candidate will have a sensitive and compassionate approach given the nature of the claims and reputational risks for the department.
The role requires a strategic and highly experienced litigation lawyer with excellent communication, project management, and stakeholder management skills. You will work collaboratively with the management team to develop and implement strategies to manage legal risk and provide high-quality legal advice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct, practical, and strategic legal advice to portfolio ministers, the secretary, and other senior staff.
- Work closely with the management team to develop and implement strategies to manage legal risk.
- Manage all litigated and non-litigated negligence claims brought against the department.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government schools and other departments.
