Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Canine Care Specialist to join our team at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry department. As a Detector Dog Kennel Attendant/Transport Driver, you will be responsible for the care and well-being of our working dogs, including observing and reporting on their health and behavior, providing fitness and enrichment activities, and conducting canine health maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Observe and report on health and/or behavioral abnormalities in our dogs
  • Provide a range of suitable fitness and enrichment activities for our dogs as directed
  • Clean kennels and yards
  • Conduct canine health maintenance, including washing, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and administering oral medications
  • Transport detector dogs to work locations using a range of vehicles, including a large van and/or ute
  • Transport dogs to veterinary services as required
  • Safely load and unload dogs in and out of vehicles
  • Maintain husbandry logs and kennel records
  • Monitor and report on the facilities' general maintenance requirements
  • Stock control, obtaining quotes, and placing orders, collecting goods, and reconciling expenses
  • Attend daily team briefings

Requirements:

  • Experience handling and caring for working dogs in a kennel environment
  • A sound knowledge and understanding of canine behavior and interaction
  • Experience transporting animals and/or operating large transport vehicles is desirable
  • Well-developed computer skills and experience using the Microsoft Office suite of applications
  • Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle driver's license
  • Ability to perform shift work
  • Physical requirements involve a combination of outdoor and office-based work
