We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to be the next Chief of Staff to the Australian Government Department of Defence. This senior role offers an exceptional opportunity to drive organisational communication, collaborations, and alignment.

Role Overview

The Chief of Staff will operate with a high degree of autonomy, serving as an advisor to the Major General (MAJGEN) of Cyber Operations Division (COD). Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic advice on current and emerging issues relevant to COD and the Defence enterprise;
  • Advising the MAJGEN and COD executive leadership team and staff on matters relating to governance, risk, and public sector accountabilities;
  • Oversight and management of the COD office and support staff, ensuring professional delivery of diary management, travel, guest management, etc.;
  • Adapting to emerging issues and reprioritising arrangements at short notice;

The successful candidate will have a proven ability to think strategically, set and prioritise busy workloads, identify risks and opportunities, and collaborate effectively in a Whole of Government setting. A high level of understanding of governance, risk, compliance, and ministerial acumen is essential, along with a sound understanding of the machinery of Government.

This role requires exceptional analytical, written, and oral communication skills, including experience with key briefing formats. The ideal candidate must also be flexible, agile, and able to multi-task in a busy environment.

About the Role

The Chief of Staff manages a team of one Executive Level 2 and four Executive Level 1 officers, supported by APS staff who provide broader enabling functions. The team works closely with the COD Executive team to plan, administer, and facilitate organisational outcomes and priorities.

The role involves close collaboration with Director General (DG) J6 Operations Support, working with a blended workforce (APS, ADF, contractors) in excess of 1,000 personnel who support the Defence mission globally.

The estimated salary for this role is $145,000 - $170,000 per annum, depending on location and experience.
