Job Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Culturally Competent Health Advocate to join our team.
The successful candidate will play a vital role in improving access to maternal health services for pregnant Aboriginal women or women having an Aboriginal baby.
This position is part of the Aboriginal Maternal & Infant Health Service (AMIHS) in Western Sydney Local Health District, which aims to establish trust and build relationships between the Aboriginal community and AMIHS.
The Culturally Competent Health Advocate will work collaboratively with the AMIHS Midwife and other Aboriginal Health staff to provide advocacy, support, liaison, referral, and health promotion services to facilitate access to healthcare for Aboriginal women and their families.
The role involves community engagement and community development, as well as providing direct clinical services as defined by the Aboriginal Health Practitioner Scope of Practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing advocacy, support, liaison, referral, and health promotion services to Aboriginal women and their families.
- Building relationships with the local Aboriginal community and establishing effective partnerships to address barriers to healthcare access.
- Working collaboratively with antenatal and maternity services across Western Sydney Local Health District and other key internal and external service providers.
- Providing direct clinical services as defined by the Aboriginal Health Practitioner Scope of Practice.
Requirements
- Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification.
- Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and established links to the local Aboriginal community in western Sydney.
- Demonstrated ability to provide cultural brokerage and social support, linkage to services, group work, community education, advocacy, and health promotion with the Aboriginal community.
