Job Opportunity: Department Manager

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Department Manager to join our team at a leading hardware and building supplies retailer.

The successful candidate will have middle management experience, ideally within retail, specifically in the industrial segment and power tools. They will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the department, ensuring operational and organisational standards are maintained, customer needs met, and maximising sales at an agreed level.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring conversion, sales, profitability and loss of the assigned store
  • Delivering excellent service to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction
  • Motivating the sales associate team to meet sales objectives by training and mentoring staff
  • Hiring, onboarding, training, performance managing, and overseeing staff, working in conjunction with the HR team
  • Managing staffing levels and time off to meet service standards, and ensuring accurate time recording
  • Managing customer queries and authorising additional discounts when necessary
  • Ensuring store compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Developing and arranging promotional material and in-store displays
  • Undertaking store administration duties such as managing budgets, monitoring security, and updating financial records
  • Monitoring inventory levels and ordering new items as required
  • Managing inventory and ensuring security of merchandise and store
  • Undertaking or directing visual merchandising and housekeeping tasks
  • Monitoring competitor pricing and ensuring optimum profit margins are achieved
  • Processing invoices and credit notes on a timely basis
  • Leading stocktake
  • Liaising with local external sales teams to identify sale opportunities and facilitate quotes and orders for customers
  • Conducting dual-call visits with specialist partners to promote sales
  • Facilitating builder and homeowner's introduction to internal sales specialists/associates
  • Evaluating customers' skills, needs, and building productive long-lasting relationships
  • Scheduling and monitoring pickup and delivery of products, and working with warehouse and delivery staff to ensure timely and accurate deliveries
  • Analysing existing processes and proposing improvements and new methods to control costs and enhance customer satisfaction

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent qualification, a minimum of 3 years' experience working in a retail or trade environment, and at least 5 years within a managerial role. They will also possess well-developed leadership and customer management abilities, customer service orientation, good communication and interpersonal skills, and competence in using MS Office.
