Job Description

Job Title: Senior Solicitor - Major Projects and Infrastructure

Job Summary:

Brisbane City Council is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Solicitor to join our Corporate Governance and Commercial team. As a Senior Solicitor, you will play a critical role in providing legal advice and support to the Council's major projects and infrastructure initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist legal advice and negotiate with external stakeholders on major projects and infrastructure initiatives.
  • Advise on commercial, large-scale construction contracts and arrangements, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Draft and advise on complex procurement contracts, ensuring that they are fair, transparent, and compliant with Council's policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a knowledge of contemporary professional literature and case law, staying up-to-date with changes in the law and industry best practices.
  • Develop strategy, advise on procurement, and manage risk for major projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Support daily operations and transformative projects leading up to Brisbane 2032, working closely with senior Council and State Government representatives.
  • Lead by example in customer focus, collaborating across Council to resolve issues and provide excellent customer service.
  • Partner with senior legal counsel and set performance standards, ensuring that the team is working efficiently and effectively.
  • Deliver timely, professional legal services in clear, easy-to-understand language, ensuring that stakeholders are informed and engaged throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engage with senior Council and State Government representatives, building strong relationships and ensuring that the Council's interests are represented.
  • Exercise independent judgment with broad guidance from Senior Legal Counsel, making decisions that are in the best interests of the Council and its stakeholders.
  • Mentor and guide staff, providing guidance and support to ensure that they are equipped to perform their roles effectively.

Requirements:

  • Admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and hold a current Practising Certificate from the Queensland Law Society.
  • Proven experience in providing legal advice and support to major projects and infrastructure initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial, large-scale construction contracts and arrangements, as well as procurement laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on customer service and collaboration.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and make sound judgments.
