Job Overview

Role Summary

The Senior Lawyer position offers a challenging and rewarding career opportunity for an experienced legal professional to join our team. As a key member of the Legal Office, you will work closely with the Director of Legal and Integrity to provide timely and strategic legal advice and assistance to the Chief Justice and CEO/PR on diverse and complex issues related to workplace law and WHS.

This is an excellent opportunity to utilize your expertise in labour law and workplace relations, as well as your knowledge of court administration and procedure. You will have the opportunity to work on high-profile cases and contribute to the development of policies and protocols that shape the Court's operations.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing expert legal advice and counsel to the Executive Management of the Courts on critical issues that impact the organization. You will also assist the CEO/PR and Deputy Principal Registrar in relation to complaints against Registrars and staff, and the Chief Justice in the handling of judicial complaints.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely and comprehensive legal advice on workplace relations matters.
  • Assist the CEO/PR and Deputy Principal Registrar in relation to complaints against Registrars and staff.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and protocols that shape the Court's operations.
  • Collaborate with the Federal Court of Australia Agency's People and Culture Section to draw upon their service delivery for human resources functions.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in law and admission as a practitioner of the High Court and/or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia are required.
  • 3 years or more of experience as a legal practitioner or in-house counsel, legal officer, or equivalent position within either the private or public sector is required.
  • Experience in labour law and dealing in workplace relations is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a court administration environment is also desirable, but not essential.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and strategies to deal with complex and sensitive matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an environment requiring utmost tact and discretion.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with judges and staff of the Courts and external legal practitioners.
  • Demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to critically evaluate large volumes of information, manage competing priorities effectively, and exercise sound judgment in decision-making in a high-pressured environment.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, liaison, and negotiation skills, including the ability to build and maintain positive professional relationships with key stakeholders, represent the Courts at a senior level, when interacting with external stakeholders, and the ability to influence behaviour and attitudes at all levels.
