Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Solicitor to join our team at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service. As a Solicitor, you will be responsible for providing expert legal services to our clients, including casework assistance and information to clients and external stakeholders.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a reputable and community-based organization that delivers innovative and professional legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert casework assistance and information to clients and external stakeholders.
- Develop culturally competent legal services and work closely with the Principal Legal Officer and Directors of Law.
- Assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other legal staff members' training/education.
- Work collaboratively with the Regional Manager on duty lawyer matters during periods of demand.
Selection Criteria:
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight for and their right to justice and equity.
- admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate.
- sound interpersonal and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to empathetically convey sound information or advice, and to present written information, casework statistical reports, and online applications.
- experience (or an in-depth understanding) of high-level client services in Family and Civil Law proceedings, including casework relating to Child Protection and Domestic Violence Applications, and Civil Litigation generally, Anti-discrimination matters, Estates, and Consumer Protection type matters.
- an in-depth working knowledge of key legislation, practices, and procedures in the fields of Family Law (Family, Child Protection, and Domestic Violence matters), and for Civil, a range of legislation such as the Succession Act.
- preparedness to work after hours if necessary, and willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other legal staff members' training/education.
Desirable Criteria:
It is desirable that you have:
- ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment.
- mobility, access, and safety, including a current Queensland Driver Licence and ability to drive in all reasonable conditions, and a willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate.
- minimum two (2) years post-admission experience, although graduates with a significant comprehension of the application of relevant legislation and employment experience may be afforded an interview.
- ability to assist the Regional Manager on duty lawyer matters during periods of demand.
