Ipswich, Australia Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Legal Service Full time
About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Practitioner to join our team at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service. Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement culturally safe resources and practices for the delivery of effective legal services
  • Improve the health and well-being of clients of the Health Justice Partnership
  • Achieve better justice and health outcomes for patients of Kambu's clinics at Ipswich and Laidley
  • Improve understanding and awareness among staff from ATSILS and Kambu about health and legal issues, and the intersectionality of both, experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Improve referral processes to make services more accessible to clients with health and legal needs
Selection Criteria

The successful candidate will possess the following essential criteria:

  • Alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight for and their right to justice and equity
  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate, and the Australian High Court
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills including a demonstrated ability to compassionately convey sound information or advice to clients, and to present casework documents, relevant statistical reports and applications in concise, plain language using computer technology
  • Experience (or an in-depth understanding) of high-level client services in Civil Law proceedings (including some experience in Domestic Violence applications; plus, casework relating to Litigation and other claims, Anti-discrimination matters, Workplace Relations, Wills and Estates, Administrative Law, and Consumer Law/Protection)
  • An in-depth working knowledge of key legislation, practices, and procedures across a range of legislation e.g. Succession Act, with a commitment to keeping up to date on law and procedure
  • Preparedness to work after hours if necessary, sound interpersonal and communication skills
Desirable Criteria

The following desirable criteria would be highly regarded:

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment
  • Current Queensland Driver Licence and willingness to travel by air and road may be required for the role, dependent upon the location
  • Willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History)

Candidates may be required to disclose misconduct (criminal convictions, prosecution investigations etc.,) that prevent an ATSILS Security clearance in relation to any conviction for fraud or other dishonesty related criminal offences. To this end, a preferred candidate must be prepared to consent to a criminal history check being conducted (if requested). Note: A criminal history does not automatically preclude selection for interview, and a preliminary check can be discussed with the HR Manager after a candidate has been shortlisted for interview.
