Canberra, ACT, Australia Australian Defence Force Full time

As a Senior Maritime Systems Engineer with the Australian Defence Force, you'll have the unique opportunity to spend a year working on highly advanced Navy systems onboard a submarine. You'll gain invaluable life and work experience while getting paid to travel.

The role offers an immersive experience in the underwater world of complex systems within areas such as radar, sonar, communication, navigation, combat, and weapons. You'll contribute to operations onboard the submarine and learn from experienced Engineers about their everyday duties, including overseeing teams of technicians, coordinating tasks, and keeping Officer of the Day duties.

You'll be supported throughout your training by professional Navy personnel who will provide guidance for you to get the most out of this experience. The Gap Year will be broken up into different stages, giving you the opportunity to receive basic training and tour Navy shore establishments.

You'll experience life at sea and ashore, contributing to the operation of the ship or unit. Your training begins at the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC), HMAS Creswell in NSW, where you'll complete a 15-week course alongside other new Navy officers before continuing with the program.

RANC is an energetic environment that challenges you to meet Navy standards of fitness, demeanor, and behavior. Coupled with the highest standard of leadership training, the skills you'll gain across this role are transferable to other management and leadership positions.

Key benefits of this role include:

  • A competitive salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per annum
  • Opportunities for career growth and development
  • A chance to work on complex maritime systems
  • A unique edge in leadership and management roles

This is not a training program; it's designed to offer workplace experience as a Senior Maritime Systems Engineer. If you're interested in the full-time role, find out more here.
