Support Role in Education

Niddrie Autistic School is an exemplary education provider for students with autism, catering to students from Prep to Year 3. Our commitment to excellence encompasses staff, students, and families alike. We have high expectations and believe that every child can learn and achieve. Our expertise in developing and implementing Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and assessing student learning ensures our goals are accomplished.

The school offers intensive programs for students with autism, focusing on their social communication and sense of self and others. Our core values include respect, collaboration, diversity, ongoing learning, and the sharing and growth of knowledge.

To support autistic children and their families, we provide initial assistance as they transition to a designated mainstream or specialist school setting. We also offer professional development and guidance to community schools beyond our own.

We enroll students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The majority of students travel from a wide geographical area and use a contract bus service to attend Niddrie Autistic School.

Job Responsibilities

You will perform tasks under supervision and direction as an education support class employee. This may involve coordinating other education support class staff within the work area or educational program. Your role supports the educational services provided to students but does not involve duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.

  • Providing routine support for teachers, including assisting with planning student routines
  • Supporting communication between teachers and parents
  • Communicating with teachers on routine matters related to students and/or other responsibilities
  • Providing basic physical care and wellbeing support for students, such as toileting, meals, and lifting
  • Communicating with students to support comprehension of basic tasks and information
  • Addressing immediate behavioral presentations relating to specific students within a classroom setting aligned to school policy and procedure
  • Providing basic support and supervision for individuals or groups of up to 4 students within a classroom setting
  • Supporting teachers in coordinating educational programs independently or under minimal supervision
  • Providing medical intervention support to students under specific conditions with appropriate training and guidance
  • Providing specialized communication support for students and teachers in areas such as AUSLAN and braille
Selection Criteria

Selection criteria include:

  • Demonstrated capacity to perform duties consistent with established guidelines and frameworks
  • Demonstrated capacity to work and collaborate with others in a team environment
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively in a team environment, including high-level oral and written communication skills
  • Possession of technical knowledge and expertise relevant to the position
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide advice and support to management and other school staff in respect to the work area
  • A commitment to professional learning and growth for both self and others
Appointment Requirements

Appointment of successful applicants will be made subject to a satisfactory pre-employment screening check. A probationary period may apply during the first year of employment, and induction and support programs will be provided.
