**About the Role**

We are seeking a seasoned legal professional to join our team as a Senior Lawyer in the newly formed Regulatory Reform Unit (RRU). The RRU is responsible for leading the legal aspects of significant legislative projects, including the implementation of proposals to improve child safety in early childhood services in Victoria.

The successful candidate will play a key role in legislative project delivery, providing expert legal advice with a focus on government law issues. They will contribute to the development, management and implementation of significant legislative projects, including primary legislation and subordinate instruments such as regulations, Ministerial Orders, Orders in Council and other legal instruments.

To be successful in this role, you will have a strong background in government law, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with senior executives, ministers' offices, central government agencies and other departments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice on government law issues, particularly the application of Victorian laws in relation to government administration and the school and early childhood education system.
  • Contribute to the development, management and implementation of significant legislative projects, including primary legislation and subordinate instruments.
  • Work closely with the Project Director and Principal Lawyers to respond to urgent and important emerging issues.
  • Engage with other areas of the department to seek out strategies to support the successful delivery of legislative projects.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Laws degree or equivalent qualification.
  • At least 5 years of experience in government law, preferably in a regulatory reform or policy development role.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with senior executives, ministers' offices, central government agencies and other departments.
