Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence Mental Health Nurse

Katherine West Health Board is an industry-renowned provider of comprehensive, culturally secure primary healthcare services in the Northern Territory. As a fully accredited Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, KWHB delivers preventative, clinical, and emergency care across the remote outback region southwest of Katherine, with a focus on improving the health and wellbeing of all people in the area while providing a strong community voice in matters affecting their health.

The organisation operates programs across the wider Big Rivers Region, which includes areas served by Wurli Wurlinjang Health Service (Wurli), Sunrise Health Service (Sunrise), and the Northern Territory Government (NT Health). The Big Rivers Region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 km2.

The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to shape the Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (FDSV) Program from its inception, contributing to its foundational development. By delivering trauma-informed care, this program aims to make a profound and positive impact on the lives of women and children in the region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough mental health assessments to create tailored recovery plans and provide ongoing support.
  • Apply trauma-informed care principles to ensure a safe, supportive environment for clients.
  • Offer holistic, evidence-based, and culturally appropriate case management for FDSV victim-survivors with complex needs.
  • Educate clients, families, and communities about trauma and coping strategies to empower recovery.
  • Deliver culturally relevant health promotion messages through community engagement in remote areas.
  • Collaborate with local organisations to ensure coordinated access to essential services for clients.
  • Identify increasing risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies.

About You

The successful candidate will have proven expertise in trauma-informed and culturally sensitive holistic health care, with a strong understanding of trauma, mental health, and social and emotional wellbeing. Additionally, experience in FDSV is highly desirable, but KWHB values employee development and is open to candidates presenting with transferable experience, and new graduate applicants.

Requirements:

  • AHPRA registration as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner or Registered Nurse with unrestricted practice rights.
  • Strong background in trauma-informed care with experience in supporting trauma survivors.
  • Understanding of health and wellbeing issues for Aboriginal people in remote Northern Territory.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with vulnerable populations.
  • Strong time management, decision-making, professional boundaries, and organisational skills.
