About the Role

The Director Strategy, Economics, Insights and Reporting plays a pivotal role in shaping AFSA's enterprise direction by leading the development of long-range strategy, delivering enterprise reporting, integrating performance intelligence and providing robust, system-level advice to guide agency decision-making.

This position brings together strategic foresight, planning, engagement and enterprise reporting and messaging into a consolidated capability that supports the CEO, Executive and broader leadership cohort.

The role provides a helicopter view across key strategic functions, connecting disparate data, planning and delivery activities into a unified, insight-rich performance narrative.

  • Lead the development and integration of AFSA's long range enterprise strategy and planning frameworks.
  • Deliver high-quality internal and external reporting, including the Corporate Plan.
  • Interpret complex data and policy signals and provide system-level advice to guide agency positioning.
  • Offer authoritative guidance on economic trends, and the feasibility and implications of strategic directions.
  • Develop insights to inform strategic messaging and support the communication of AFSA's vision and outcomes.
  • Establish and continuously improve enterprise performance measurement and evaluation frameworks.
  • Provide strategic foresight through scenario modelling and risk-informed planning.
  • Steward AFSA's insight ecosystem – connecting data holders, surfacing strategic questions and reducing duplication.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and the academic community to publish research that contributes to policy debate and establishes AFSA as a thought leader in regulation and financial services.
  • Partner with agencies such as Treasury, Finance, and APSC to ensure AFSA is positioned to respond to and influence national policy agendas.
  • Represent AFSA in external forums and participate in relevant communities of practice to ensure the agency remains informed of best practices in data analytics and economic modelling.
  • Build strategic capability across the organisation by modelling analytical rigour, collaboration, and clear direction.

This role requires post-graduate qualifications in economics, strategy, data science, business administration or a related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in public sector strategy, performance reporting or regulatory reform, high-level critical thinking and policy modelling capabilities, strong track record in senior stakeholder engagement and executive advising, and established credibility in both domestic and international forums.

Benefits:

  • Generous superannuation (15.4%).
  • A modern work environment.
  • Access to Employee Assistance Provider.
  • Flexibility to balance work and personal life (including working from home arrangements and flexible start and finish times where applicable).

Eligibility:

  • Please note that this opportunity is open only to Australian Citizens.
  • The successful applicant must have or be willing to undergo a security clearance to the level of Baseline as a condition of employment.
  • To satisfy character requirements all AFSA employees must undergo a police records check.
  • Where a person has received a redundancy benefit from APS agency employment and their corresponding redundancy benefit period has not expired, they may be ineligible for employment.
