Senior Analytical Chemist Position

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Analytical Chemist to join our Hydrochemistry team in Tasmania.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in analytical chemistry, laboratory management, and data quality assurance. They will be responsible for performing laboratory analyses of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and salinity, as well as maintaining instrumentation and contributing to laboratory management procedures.

The role requires providing up to 85 days of seagoing support annually, participating in coastal fieldwork and extended voyages, where the candidate will oversee sample collection and conduct onboard analyses in collaboration with the science party.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collecting and analysing seawater samples for a range of nutrient species, as well as salinity and dissolved oxygen, both at sea and in the shore laboratory.
  • Applying standard methods to process results and ensure data accuracy through quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures.
  • Maintaining and calibrating lab and shipboard analytical instruments.
  • Liaising with clients and stakeholders on data collection, processing, and issue resolution.
  • Contributing to maintaining and improving laboratory management procedures, and undertaking a variety of tasks that have a high degree of technical difficulty.
  • Supporting data collection and lab operations during sea-going research voyages (up to 85 days per year, remote environments).

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • PhD or MSc in Analytical Chemistry or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in analytical chemistry and laboratory management.
  • Strong knowledge of QA/QC procedures and data quality assurance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
