We are seeking highly skilled communications specialists to join our team at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Canberra.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for talented individuals with expertise in media, strategic communications, public diplomacy, social media, internal communications, speech writing, campaign management, graphic design, digital content production and website publishing.

As a communications officer, you will be part of a dynamic team working alongside foreign policy, trade, international development and enabling teams to strategically advance Australia's interests.

The Strategic Communications Division (SGD) manages DFAT's principal media, communications and public diplomacy work, while also shaping the information environment against foreign information manipulation and interference.

You will contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of DFAT's public and internal engagement by undertaking targeted communications work in areas including consular, international development, passports and trade, and for regions including the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement effective communication strategies to promote Australia's global influence and build relationships with domestic and international stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to advance Australia's foreign policy and trade interests.
  • Produce high-quality content for various platforms, including media releases, speeches, social media, and website publications.
  • Manage and maintain websites, social media accounts, and other online platforms to ensure consistency and accuracy of information.

Your work will directly contribute to expanding Australia's global influence and helping to build relationships with domestic and international stakeholders.

Requirements
  • Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a similar role, preferably in government or international relations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to adapt to different audiences and formats.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
