Australia's Space Sector Advisor
The Australian Space Agency Advisory Board provides strategic advice to the Secretary of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (or their delegate) and the Head of the Australian Space Agency on matters relevant to the growth and strategic direction of Australia's civil space sector.
This includes providing commercial, scientific, and technological advice on Australia's space policies, programs, and priorities, as well as guidance on integrating space activities with broader scientific, technological and innovation efforts. Advisory Board members advocate for the importance of and opportunities in research and development investment within Australia's space sector.
The Australian Space Agency coordinates civil space matters across government and supports the growth and transformation of Australia's space industry. Space plays a crucial role in achieving the Australian Government's objectives, including safeguarding national prosperity, reigniting productivity growth and business investment, transitioning to net zero, and supporting workers in adapting to and adopting new technologies.
As a member of the Advisory Board, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of Australia's space capabilities, participating in an important role in aligning Australia's space initiatives with Government priorities.
The Advisory Board may consist of up to nine members, including a Chair and two ex-officio members, appointed by the Minister for Industry and Science. The functioning of the Advisory Board is supported by the Department.
Members are required to complete declarations of interest prior to Advisory Board meetings. As the Chair and members are excluded from discussion where they have a material conflict of interest, applicants should comment on whether their register of interests would see them excluded from substantial parts of the process.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Providing strategic advice on matters relevant to the sectors in which the Agency operates, including identifying challenges and opportunities for the Australian space sector.
- Contributing knowledge, skills and experience to ensure the Advisory Board is effectively fulfilling its responsibilities and undertaking its functions.
**Benefits:
You will have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of Australia's space capabilities and participate in an important role in aligning Australia's space initiatives with Government priorities.
In addition to contributing to the growth and transformation of Australia's space industry, you will also be able to develop your skills and expertise in corporate governance and decision-making strategies.
Join us in this exciting opportunity to make a positive impact on Australia's space sector and help drive the country's economic agenda forward.
Requirements:
Applicants should have significant experience in providing evidence-based advice to senior levels of government, as well as strong leadership skills with a focus on providing guidance in dealing with complex and/or sensitive program or policy matters as they arise.
A strong understanding of the interface between science and public policy is essential, as is the ability to provide clear direction and decision-making on strategies.
Additionally, applicants should have expertise in their industry and/or field, including the space industry, space-adjacent sectors, science and technology, research and development, commercialisation, global or national networks relevant to space activities, government and policy experience, venture capital, national security and resilience, and the intersection between civil and military space.
Executive management and governance within government or private sector advisory bodies, boards or committees is also desirable.
Applicants should also have a strong understanding of corporate governance and the ability to lead the Advisory Board and represent its advice to the Secretary and the Head of the Australian Space Agency.
