About Natural Hazards Research Australia

Natural Hazards Research Australia is Australia's national centre for natural hazard resilience and disaster risk reduction. We address the major challenges arising from natural hazards, including bushfires, floods, cyclones, heatwaves, storms, and other hazards.

We undertake research that promotes resilience to the impacts of natural hazards and reduces disaster risk, supporting the needs of various critical stakeholders – including emergency service agencies and communities – in mitigating impacts of, responding to, and recovering from disasters caused by natural hazards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement projects that meet the needs of end-users.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Manage partnerships and collaborations with government departments, universities, and emergency service agencies.
  • Provide expertise on natural hazards science and emergency management.
  • Contribute to the development of research programs and strategies.
Selection Criteria
  1. University degree in an area relevant to natural hazards science and/or emergency management, or equivalent work experience.
  2. Strong skills in project management, including planning and organising work efficiently.
  3. Experience in partnership or stakeholder engagement/management roles.
  4. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Highly developed interpersonal skills, with ability to liaise effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  6. Sound conceptual and analytical skills, including identifying issues, managing solutions, and developing appropriate solutions.
  7. At least 2 years' experience in a similar or related role.
  8. Knowledge of the workings of government departments and agencies, universities, or research organisations.
  9. Ability to work independently and thrive in a remote working environment.
