Job Overview

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) seeks a highly skilled Data Scientist to join its team in Canberra.

This is a challenging opportunity for an individual with expertise in data science and artificial intelligence disciplines.

  • Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing subject matter expertise in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence disciplines
  • Providing expert advice to evaluate problems to be solved and the need for data science solutions
  • Identifying and justifying what data sources to use or acquire
  • Specifying and applying appropriate data science techniques and specialised programming languages
  • Critically evaluating and reviewing the benefits and value of data science techniques and tools developed across the AFP
  • Ensuring alignment with and compliance to external AI safety standards and regulatory policies

In addition to these key responsibilities, you will drive the development and application of data science solutions for the business and enterprise.

Technical skills required include proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, statistics and mathematics, machine learning and deep learning, data wrangling and visualisation, and big data technologies.

Non-technical (soft) skills required include communication and storytelling, problem-solving, business acumen, curiosity and lifelong learning, and awareness of ethical implications of data and AI.

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • Australian citizenship at time of application
  • Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or ability to obtain one
  • Contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a like or related field

Desirable requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics and/or relevant industry experience and certification.
