Lead Electrical Engineer in Substation Design

We are seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to join our Transmission & Electrification team at WSP. This role will see you lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary engineering projects, focusing on substation design.

About the Role

This is a key leadership position that requires strong technical expertise in electrical engineering, particularly in high-voltage (HV) substations. As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will support the team by working on complex projects and utilising your experience in design, construction, and commissioning of substations.

You will collaborate with talented professionals working on iconic projects to drive future-ready outcomes that will benefit clients and communities.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct HV design of transmission & distribution substations including layouts, ratings, sizing, specifying, and providing technical oversight.
  • Develop project-level and equipment-level specifications.
  • Apply working knowledge of power system protection and SCADA systems.
  • Apply working knowledge of transmission lines and underground cables.
  • Apply working knowledge of power system earthing design.
  • Support the high voltage scope for Owner's Engineer and Technical Due Diligence projects.
  • Undertake review of designs and reports.
  • Verify design work undertaken by other team members.
  • Coach and mentor junior staff in electrical engineering or project delivery.
  • Provide leadership in Safety-in-Design (SID) and fulfilling legislative requirements in SID.
  • Lead design projects and co-ordinate with various disciplines.
  • Undertake short-term site visits according to business needs.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Electrical Engineering) or Equivalent.
  • Typically, 10-15 years' post-graduate experience.
  • Existing RPEQ/RPEV or the ability to attain is required.
  • Ideal experience in a consultancy environment.
  • Experience in EHV and HV electrical engineering from conceptual to detailed design in substations, cable systems, transmission & distribution utilities or renewable energy projects.
  • Experience in client-facing roles, ability to provide robust advice and support design projects through clear communication of project status, issues, and risks.
  • Proficient in proposal and report writing.
