About the Opportunity

This role represents a rare opportunity to work on the pioneering SSN AUKUS Build Program, delivering an essential sovereign capability for Australia.

The Nuclear Safety Justification Plan Work Package Lead will be responsible for coordinating and creating a comprehensive safety justification plan that outlines the philosophy and strategy for establishing a robust safety case structure.

This role involves assessing and controlling the installation and construction processes, ensuring that all operational activities adhere to the principle of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) for radiological risks.

The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate potential hazards, implement effective risk management strategies, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, ultimately safeguarding the health and safety of both the public and workers throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of nuclear safety regulations, risk management and technical processes in complex and multi-faceted environments.
  • Create a safety justification plan and integrate various safety assessment and compliance measures throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure all nuclear activities comply with stringent relevant safety and regulatory standards. Conduct safety assessments and implement necessary measures to mitigate risks to a minimised level that are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
  • Provide technical leadership and support to the Nuclear and Capability Department (NCD). Address and resolve technical challenges, ensuring that all activities are conducted safely, efficiently and effectively.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with nuclear operations. Develop and implement robust risk management plans to address potential issues and ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear systems.
  • Maintain clear and effective communication with all stakeholders, including project updates, technical reports, and regulatory compliance. Provide regular updates on nuclear operations.
  • Foster a culture of safety and accountability, making it essential for stakeholders to stay updated on industry best practices and emerging safety technologies.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in nuclear operation processes and systems. Implement innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, safety, and performance.
About you
  • Tertiary Qualifications in Engineering, Nuclear, Safety or a related field. A Master's or Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering is highly desirable.
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent certification in nuclear engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading complex and multifaceted programs, requiring a deep understanding of safety regulations, risk management and technical process.
  • Experience coordinating with a team of technical personnel in complex and unique industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering and 'requirements management' principles.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Self-motivated, and able to manage ambiguity in complex environments and visualise solutions.
  • Exceptional and effective time management, planning and organisational skills.
  • Ability to consistently and positively manage multiple stakeholders and priorities simultaneously.
  • Decision making ability and leadership skills.
  • Specific experience within the Defence Shipbuilding or Nuclear Industries will be highly regarded.
Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance to an NV1 level. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as this role requires an ability to access protected US defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible.
