Senior Legal Associate

Job Description:

The role of Senior Legal Associate is a key position within the Court's reformed structure. The successful applicant will provide legal support to judges, focusing on providing research assistance due to workload volumes or specific matters. This legal support may relate to various national practice areas of the Court.

  • Provide assistance to multiple judges with tasks including judgment proofing, research, and court-related work.
  • Support judges and chambers by assisting with complex matters requiring extra help, including in-court assistance.
  • Act as an associate in a judge's chambers when another associate is absent or conflicted.
  • Assist new judges in their chambers prior to staff appointment, involving travel to other registries if needed.
  • Show adaptability, flexibility, and ability to work with different judges and chambers staff.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management skills and handle competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Be prepared to travel interstate and work from various Court registries.
  • Commit to the position for a period of 18 months.
Required Skills and Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, applicants must possess relevant experience and skills, including:

  • Legal qualification and admission to practice as a practitioner of the High Court and/or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia;
  • Ability to conduct legal research, manage workloads effectively, and respond accurately and promptly to requests for legal research;
  • Initiative to work independently, take responsibility for progressing work, and collaborate with colleagues while maintaining professional relationships and confidentiality;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including electronic legal resources and the Court's case management systems and courtroom technology;
  • Adaptability to changing situations and priorities;
  • A high standard of ethical behavior.
