Job Overview

Nine is Australia's largest locally owned media company. Working at Nine, you'll have access to a unique range of experiences and opportunities, helping drive the success of the country's most trusted television, radio, digital and publishing brands. Our content reaches almost every Australian - meaning what we do has real impact. We bring people together, celebrate the big moments, and capture the everyday ones. Some of our most beloved brands have been part of Australian life for generations, and others - new on the scene - have already found their place firmly in our lives.

The Observability team, as part of Platform Engineering, is dedicated to providing comprehensive insights into the health, performance, and behaviour of critical systems and applications. We empower engineering teams across the organisation with robust monitoring, logging, and tracing capabilities, enabling them to proactively identify issues, troubleshoot efficiently, and ensure a seamless experience for users. We strive to build scalable, reliable, and user-friendly observability solutions that support continuous growth and innovation.

As an Observability engineer, your primary responsibility will be to lead and manage a team of engineers within the Platform Engineering domain. You will define and execute the strategy and roadmap for Observability across the organisation, covering logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting. Ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of Observability platforms and tools is also a key aspect of this role.

Other responsibilities include driving the adoption of Observability best practices, educating development teams on their effective use, collaborating with other engineering managers and product teams to integrate Observability into the software development lifecycle, staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies in Observability, managing vendor relationships and evaluating new tools and solutions, contributing to the overall architecture and design of the platform infrastructure, and leading by example in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We foster a culture of continuous learning and growth within the team. As a leader, you will provide clear direction, set performance expectations, and offer constructive feedback to team members. Managing team resourcing, recruitment, and retention are also essential aspects of this role.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven experience in software engineering management, leading teams focused on observability, SRE, or platform engineering.
  • Strong technical background in observability principles, tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry), and best practices.
  • Experience building and managing distributed systems and cloud-native applications (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • The ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
Benefits

Our employee benefits include:

  • 18 weeks paid parental leave with no distinction between primary and secondary carers.
  • Access to our Employee Exclusives program, offering unique experiences, behind-the-scenes access, and awesome perks.
  • Digital newspaper subscription to our mastheads.
  • Annual gift voucher for Stan subscription.
Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We're committed to a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace. From day one, you'll be encouraged to bring your whole self to work and will be supported to perform at your best. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disabilities, and of all ages, genders, nationalities, backgrounds and cultures.
