Job Opportunity for Digital Archivist

The role of the Digital Archivist is to work collaboratively with staff across the library on the management of RMIT's historically significant digital collections.

The Digital Archivist will appraise hybrid and born-digital collections, use digital forensics tools and techniques to triage digital material for ingest into the digital preservation system, and develop and support workflows and processes for the acquisition and ongoing stewardship of digital collections.

The key responsibilities of the Digital Archivist include:

  • Appraising, arranging, and describing the hybrid/digital archival collections in the archival content management system.
  • Exploring preservation requirements for a pre-ingest environment, including packaging specifications and drafting ingest workflows and procedures for the digital preservation system.
  • Investigating solutions to unique issues associated with legacy, obsolete, and undocumented file formats.
  • Structuring and preparing the digital collections for ingest into the digital preservation repository system.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to support the ingest, preservation, and access of the digital collections into the digital preservation repository system.
  • Ensuring digital material is stored and handled in accordance with relevant regulatory requirements and archival management, access, and preservation standards.
  • Participating in professional networks and consulting with industry colleagues about best practices and principles.
Key Qualifications
  • Relevant degree in Archives, Library Science, Information Technology or related field.
  • Experience working with digital archives and preservation systems.
  • Strong understanding of digital preservation concepts and practices.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
