Job Title: Disability Support Specialist

The Disability Support Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring students with disabilities, long-term illnesses, or mental health conditions are included and supported throughout their educational journey.

This position involves providing direct support to students and primary caregivers through appointments, class talks, presentations, workshops, resource creation, and collaboration with educators to meet the diverse needs of the student body.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the Student Support team, providing expertise to colleagues across the organization, students, and external support service providers.

  • Act as a thought leader and specialist problem solver to support delivery departments and enhance the student experience.
  • Mentor, coach, monitor, and support team members and staff to apply best practice methods and support for students with disabilities.
  • Provide advice and guidance on disability-related queries and potential impacts on study.
  • Liaise with staff to ensure reasonable adjustments are implemented according to relevant legislation.
  • Provide support and advice in line with relevant legislation.
  • Assist students with disabilities and primary carers by recommending Reasonable Adjustments, including Equitable Assessment Arrangements, to provide equitable access.
  • Coordinate and facilitate targeted social connection groups, fostering belonging, peer connection, and inclusive community engagement.
  • Provide teaching areas with informal professional development and suggest strategies to enhance capacity to respond ethically and appropriately to learning needs.
  • Identify and source solutions to educator and delivery department problems through theoretical, methodical, and practical advice and support services.
  • Liaise with government departments and external agencies as required to meet student needs.
  • Maintain professional contact with disability support staff across the sector and contribute to networks such as the Disability Network (DN).

About You:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with extensive experience in equity and diversity, including an understanding of relevant legislation.

  • Extensive knowledge of and commitment to anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation, particularly regarding people with disabilities.
  • Well-developed communication and liaison skills applied in supporting students with disabilities.
  • An appropriate understanding of policy and legislative settings relating to student support.
