Job Title: Flood Risk Specialist

Flood Operations are critical to ensuring public safety and meeting our obligations under the Water Act. We are seeking a Flood Risk Specialist to join our team.

The primary responsibility of this role is focused on year-round operational flood forecasting and warning as part of a planned National Water Operations Team (NWOT) roster.

  • Maintain awareness of the daily weather and flood risk across Australia and the potential for severe weather events.
  • Monitor rainfall and river height data, run hydrologic flood models, prepare and issue flood warning products, and liaise with colleagues across the Bureau's value chain and external stakeholders.
  • Support national flood operations, ensure systems are operationally ready, and resources are available.
  • Make evidence-based decisions under pressure using up-to-date science, sound judgment, and best-practice principles.

About This Role:
  • This role will be required to support routine national flood operations, which includes a planned roster involving out-of-hours restrictions with extended hours, particularly during flood events.
  • Suitable candidates will be highly motivated self-starters and team players who can work within an interdisciplinary and diverse work environment under limited supervision.
Requirements:
  • A good understanding of operational flood forecasting and the total flood warning system, underpinned by a solid hydrology or meteorology background.
  • A sound ability to excel in high-pressure, complex, and dynamic operating environments.
