Flood Operations Specialist

Job Summary:

  • Maintain awareness of daily weather and flood risk across Australia, as well as the potential for severe weather events.
  • Monitor rainfall and river height data, run hydrologic flood models, prepare and issue flood warning products, and collaborate with colleagues across various teams.
  • Support national flood operations, ensuring systems are operational and resources are available.
  • Make informed decisions under pressure using up-to-date science, sound judgement, best-practice principles, and established procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Integrate seamlessly within a national operational framework.
  • As part of the National Water Operations Team, focus on monitoring rainfall and river height data, running hydrologic flood models, preparing and issuing flood warning products, and collaborating with colleagues across various teams.
  • Support national flood operations, ensuring systems are operational and resources are available.
  • Make informed decisions under pressure using up-to-date science, sound judgement, best-practice principles, and established procedures.
  • Ensure operations are collaborative, responsive, and built on principles of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • BUILD strong relationships with teams across various departments, effectively communicating technical information to convey flood warning product information.
  • Support projects driving continuous improvement aligned with team objectives.

Requirements:

  • Good understanding of operational flood forecasting and total flood warning system, underpinned by a solid background in hydrology or meteorology.
  • Ability to excel in high-pressure, complex, and dynamic operating environments during severe weather events.
  • Commitment to supporting teams outside standard working hours during periods of enhanced flood risk and severe weather events.
  • Leadership, personal resilience, decisiveness, astute problem-solving skills, and ability to manage in high-pressure environments.
