About the Role

Monash University is seeking highly skilled and dedicated individuals to join its Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) as volunteer members. The AEC plays a crucial role in ensuring the ethical, humane, and responsible care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review research activities involving animals to ensure they meet the highest standards of animal welfare and scientific merit.
  • Provide expert advice on animal care and use, including housing needs, drugs, procedures, and post-procedure care.
  • Participate in AEC meetings and discussions to ensure robust review of projects and effective operation of the Committee.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and guidelines for animal research and teaching.
  • Collaborate with other AEC members to ensure a comprehensive and informed review process.
Requirements
  • Category A (Veterinarian): A person with qualifications in veterinary science recognized for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia, with experience relevant to the research and teaching activities of Monash University.
  • Category C (Animal Welfare): A person with a demonstrable commitment to and established experience in furthering the welfare of animals, with a good knowledge of the general context of animal welfare and a general understanding of the ways in which society considers it acceptable to treat animals.
